Waterford...Results of the Dromana 5 - Fri 25 Jun 2010

Runners passing through the magnificent Dromana Arch and Bridge.

There was a record entry of 208 runners for the 18th Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 held on Friday night.
The full results are now up on the West Waterford AC site. This was the seventh race in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series 2010 and also the last chance to enter the series.

A new Ladies course record was set by
Pauline Lambe in 29:20.
The men's race was won by Philip Harty, who has just qualified for the Irish team for the European mountain running championships to be held in Bulgaria.

The men's record is still held by John Treacy.

The entry fee was €10, and thisincluded a bus which was provided to transport runners from Cappoquin GAA grounds to the start at Villierstown.
It was a very humid evening, and more than a few flies and midget than usual!

The signposted distance from Villerstown to Cappoquin was 4.75 miles, so the race started out the other side of the town, on the road down to Villierstown Quay.
Although the race was run entirely in daylight hours, we were soon into the the dim light of the tree lined roads of Dromana Woods. It was a bit unusual, to be running, with cars passing from behind with their headlights on. At the far side, there was a good view ahead, which showed the slower runners, how far ahead the elite runners were.
As runners were arriving
in Cappoquin, the local festival was taking place, including music, dancing, and boxing exhibitions.

There were some well appreciated refreshments afterwards at The Central Bar, Cappoquin, including a Birthday Cake for the young lady presenting the prizes!

Waterford...Results of the Ras Na Rinne 6 - Fri 18 Jun 2010

Michael Dunford, 1st O/40 and Raivis Zakis overall winner.

The 18th annual Mooney's Pub Ras Na Rinne was run in excellent conditions on Friday.
This was the sixth race in the
Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series 2010.

Not having done this race before, this was a bit tougher than I had imagined, but very enjoyable.

There was a display outside Ionad Pobail Na Rinne, showing those who had completed all five previous races in this 2010 series, and rankings of those who had entered the series.
If you have not yet entered the series, your last chance is at next week's Dromana 5. Cost €7.

The race started on a downhill section, beside the Garda Station. After less than half a mile, it became particularly steep. At the beach, you had to use stepping stones to cross the stream to reach the sandy area, heading east. The tide was out -- miles out. Runners appeared to spread out in a wide arc. It was difficult to choose which path to follow. The area above the high-tide mark was dry, but had large stones. The area nearer the water was still wet, with ripples in the sand. The area between the two was reasonably dry but loose sand, covered with seashells.
In any case, you had to run out to very end of this sand bar, and loop around a Blue and White checkered flag. The return path was along sand dunes, where the path was as narrow as one foot, but widening to a tractor path eventually. There was a water station at perhaps 4 miles, run by up to 10 local children. At the end of the sand dunes, you had to cross that stream again, and then begin that slow climb up to the finish line.
It was still 18C when I got back to my car at maybe 9pm.
This, in my opinion, was one of the toughest races so far in the series.

I have uploaded the route to MapMyRun. Note, there is an overlap, in the section marked "St Nicholas Park", which you pass along just before 1 Mile, and again just before the end.
The first mile is along the west along the main street, and then east past the schools.
You turn north at 1 Mile, and go over a level crossing -- I hope somebody's watching the Train Timetables ;o). It's mostly uphill from Mile 1 to 3, and the road is rather narrow from 2 to 3. Finally 3 to 5 is mostly downhill, with a sharp turn as you turn left under the railway bridge.

This was the first race in the Outfield Sports Three Counties Challenge.

The next race in this series is the The Champion Kiely Ballyneale 5k, on Friday 2nd July 2010 at 7.30pm.

Also Race 6 in Ger Wyley Sports Nike summer series will be the 18th Annual Mooney's Pub Ras Na Rinne 6 miler next Friday, June 18 at 8pm.

There were a few flyers circulating, which I've scanned :-
