Waterford...Results of the Clashmore 5 - Fri 28 May 2010

The Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series 2010 resumed on Friday, with the fourth race at Clashmore.

Joe Salmon presents overall winner Sandis Bralitis West Waterford AC with his prize.

Pauline Lambe who set a new course record at the Old Still Bar 5 mile road race last Friday evening is pictured receiving her prize and course record bonus check from Joe Salmon race sponsor.

A great evening was had by all 171 runners who finished this year's Clashmore 5 road race, sponsored by the Old Still Bar.
Runners conditions were thankfully cooler than last week's Portlaw 5 race.
I felt it was nice to be running on roads lined with trees.
The first mile was pretty easy. From 1 to just after 3 was a slow, continuous rise, getting rather steep around the 3 mile mark. Once we reached the peak at the 3.25 mile mark, the road widened, the surface was much better, and it was all downhill to the end.
My Garmin indicates the peak was about 400 feet, which to put into perspective, is about two-thirds the rise in the Dungarvan Marine Climb 6.

The roads were well supervised, with very little traffic, until right at the end, when various tractors, trailers, combined-harvesters, and other farming machines I just couldn't describe, came from all directions.
It may help if organizers could clear parked cars on the main street from the bridge towards the old church ?

Whilst waiting for the results to be compiled, runners got to watch the end of Republic of Ireland vs. Algeria, and refreshments at the Old Still Bar.

A new Ladies course record was set by Pauline Lambe of Tullamore Harriers in a time of 29:45 -- an improvement of 22 seconds on the record she set last year.

The full results are now up on the West Waterford AC site.

The category results were :-

Waterford...Preview of the Clashmore 5 - Fri 28 May 2010

The 9th Annual Old Still Bar Clashmore 5 Mile Road Race takes place at 8pm in Clashmore.

This is the fourth race in the Ger Wyley Summer Series. In 2009, this race attracted a field of 206 runners.

Directions: If you ran in the John Treacy Classic Villierstown 10 two weeks ago, there's a good chance you drove through Clashmore on the way.
From the N25, turn off at Piltown/Kinsalebeg, near Discount Fuels, heading north on the R671.
Also from the N72, turn off near the Welcome Inn, heading south on the R671.

Registration is €8 at the Old Still Bar, which is alongside the river running through the village.

The start line is almost a mile out from the village, on the south side. Allow extra time to get there.
You run back into the village, and head two miles out the other side, and take a right turn and loop back towards the village on a minor road.
Has been described as a "challenging course". This of course means there's a bit of a hill somewhere, but we're promised a downhill finish :)

Refreshments and the prize-giving will take place at the Old Still Bar after the race.

The ladies 2 mile race was somewhat easier and their results can be seen HERE

Waterford...Results of the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic - Sun 16th May 2010

--------
Race Report.......Out of the many road races that I have taken part in recently, I have to say that this one was excellent. It was a well organised race and everything seem to go really well. Plenty of parking, loads of stewards, chip timing, etc. In fact, you really got the impression that if 1,000 runners had turned up then they could have handled that many with ease.

The biggest suprise this year with this race was the drop in numbers. A total of 280 ran on the day and that compares to roughly 400 last year. That's a 30% drop. Why??

Make no mistake....This is an excellent race. Entry on the day was €20 and you got an excellent dry-fit running top for that as well. Mind you, it's bright enough to be seen from space but that's another issue ;o)

Why the drop? Are there too many other races on? Lack of publicity?

Night of Champions - A Night to Remeber

James Veale, West Waterford AC has sent a report on the event at the Town Hall Dungarvan, and a selection of photos...

Despite a small enough attendances at the town hall theatre last Saturday night for the night of champions seminar with John Treacy, Eamon Coughlan and Catherina Mc Kiernan it still turned out to be an occasion to remember for those in attendance, Organised by Waterford Sports Partnership as part of the John Treacy 10 mile classic weekend the organisers are to be congratulated on bringing together three of Irelands all time legends of the sport..

MC for the evening was that great athletics correspondent of radio and press Fintan Walsh and he brought his own style and humour to the occasion making it a most enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere for all. All three guests spoke of their time competing at the top of their sport and then a piece of video was shown of them in some of their more high profile races. A question and answers session followed which gave a very interesting insight into the training and dedication required to compete on the world stage .There was plenty of photo opportunity and chat after the formalities of the evening rounding off a great night of athletics nostalgia for all.

Waterford - Preview of the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic...Sun 16th May 2010

Waterford.......The main event this weekend in Munster is of course the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic road race in Villierstown, West Waterford. You can enter on the day and the cost is €20. Note that there are some traffic restrictions near the village on the day so follow the stewards instructions.

This is the 2nd year of this road race and it looks likely to attract a large turnout following the success of the event last year.

Note that the race starts at 1pm

The map below shows the route...
The race starts in the village and heads East for the first 2 miles. There is a very gradual climb and nothing too bad to worry about. After that, you join a larger road and a lot of the running here is downhill and fast until you turn off left just after the 3 mile mark.

From here till about mile 6, you are on nice quiet country roads with nothing too much in the way of climbs. After mile 6, you run over Dromana bridge which must be one of the strangest bridges in the country!

From this low point, there is a bit of work to do with some small climbs over the next 2 miles until you reach the 8 mile mark. Here you hit a steep section and you're bound to lose time here. Soon the gradient eases off and the climb becomes somewhat easier.

After the hill, there is plenty of fast running and you run downhill towards Villierstown. You take a left in the village around the back of the town before heading for the finish. Please note that the finish line is just around the last corner so don't expect to see it way off in the distance as you finish.

More info on the official race website

Overall.......a nice 10 mile race run on scenic quiet country roads in West Waterford. The entry fee is modest....especially when compared to the commercial races......and is well organised.

Definitely one to do.........John Desmond

Tipperary...Results of the Annerville 10k - Sun 9th May 2010

A big crowd turned up for the combined 10k race and walk over the newer flatter course.
The
results of this race are now up on the Clonmel AC site.
Almost 300 runners, and 28 walkers took place.

This was the second race in the Tipperary 29k Challenge 2010.

Conditions were warm and sunny at about 16C.
Registration at the school greeted you with signs "Silence - examination in progress"...
There was one water station at 3.36 miles, and everybody got a water bottle at the end.

The flyer description of a "very flat course" may be relative to the previous steep course.
There were plenty of stewards at all the junctions, and even some on the bends with red flags to warn any oncoming traffic.
The sight of all those big green tanks at Magners on the N24 was pretty impressive.

I have uploaded the route to MapMyRun.

The next race in this series is the Poulmucka 8k on the New Inn to Clonmel Road - Friday 21st May at 7.30 pm.

Clonmel AC are also holding the Boston Scientific Half-Marathon and 5k Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 8th August 2010, at 11am. Entry €25 up to 23rd July, and late entries €35 up to 6th August. 5k is €10 on the day.

Waterford...Results of the Waterford-Tramore 7.5 - Sat 8 May 2010

The 41th annual Waterford to Tramore road race, held in memory of Paddy Flanagan, took place on a great evening, with an increase of 24 over 2009.

I must say that this race, had the poshest registration I've seen yet, at the Theatre Royal, The Mall. Did somebody sprinkle rose petals at the front door, or did the wind do it ?

Chip Timing was used, and full results were produced by the time prizes were presented.

New course records were set by Sandis Bralitis, West Waterford AC (- 1:09) and Pauline Lamb, Tullamore Harriers AC (- 0:05)
Significant work has been done by the local council on the R675, from Tramore Road Roundabout, to Ballindud Roundabout - perhaps this helped ?

Water station was brought forward to 3.5 mile, outside Grace Dieu.
The finish line was moved slightly to outside Splashworld, and all finishers received a water bottle and banana.

Saturday 8th May 2010, 19:00
Sponsored by Bausch and Lomb

Waterford...Preview of the Waterford-Tramore 7.5 - Sat 8 May 2010

The 41st Annual Bausch And Lomb Waterford To Tramore 7.5 takes place at 7pm on Saturday.

This is the third race in the Ger Wyley Summer Series. In 2009, there were 354 finishers.

It's a point-to-point race, so there are some logistical issues to be considered.

Whilst pre-entry has been encouraged, you can still register on the day from 5.45 to 6.45 sharp at The Theatre Royal, The Mall, Waterford.
Entry fee on the day: €12 (or Juniors u20 at €5) All entrants must be over 16.

Last year, the weather was ideal. This year, the forecast is for potential rain in South Munster / South Leinster.

Chip timing will be used. This will be stapled to the back of your bib, and must be returned at the end of the race.
The start line will be about 200m from the Theatre Royal.
The course is outbound from Waterford via Parnell Street, to Tramore, along the R675 road. It will be supervised, but not closed to road traffic. After 2 miles, there is a decent hard-shoulder on both sides. There are no serious hills. As I recall from last year, it was running on the left-hand side all the way; and the
re was one waterstation, about half-way outside Steinberg Fireplaces, at Coolgower, about 4 miles out, plus water at the finish line, which is just outside the Tramore Bus Éireann depot, opposite the Majestic Hotel.

If you managed to do the first race in the series - the 'Marine Climb 6', then you should have no difficulty over this distance. If you felt comfortable at the 'Butlerstown 10k', then it's just 20% extra distance, over similar terrain.

There is a Bus Éireann service Route 360 between Waterford & Tramore.
You could either drive to Tramore early, and get the bus into Waterford; or park in Waterford, and get a bus back after the race.
Or travel in pairs to Tramore, and share a car back to Waterford.

There will be showers, refreshments, results & prizes at the Tramore GAA Clubhouse afterwards. At about 6.5 miles, as you enter Tramore, there is a roundabout at a high-point on the road. The GAA club is to the left (east) of this roundabout.

Limerick - Results of the Great Limerick Run...Sun 2nd May 2010

This was the first year of The Great Limerick Run which consisted of a full Marathon, a Half-Marathon and a 10 km fun run. The full Marathon started at 9am and about 800 runners took part. Two hours later at 11am, the Half-Marathon started and they ran the exact same route as the 2nd half for the full Marathon runners. The 10 k event started at 12:30pm.

Thousands take part in the Great Limerick 10 k fun run

Events.....10 km Fun Run
This event attracted thousands of walkers and runners and was a huge event. The actual course was not measured with a Jones counter and was probably short of the proper 10 km distance by a few hundred metres. Considering that entrants had paid €25 to enter, surely the course should have been measured accurately? Despite this, the 10 km event with all of the runners in it really added to the whole event and party atmosphere in the city on the day.

Marathon & Half-Marathon....
The Marathon and Half-Marathon courses were accurately measured with a Jones counter and had an AAI licence. So what was the course like? As a city Marathon and comparing it to Cork and Dublin, I thought that the chosen course was a case of where it 'could' go rather than 'should' go. You got the feeling that the chosen route was selected to cause the minimum of disruption to the city rather than what would make for a good Marathon route. There was a bit too much jumping up up and down off footpaths, some sections especially by the river were very narrow and there were plenty of bollards and traffic cones you could have an accident with especially where the runners were bunched together. There were some talk before the event about gates along the route but they must have been removed as there was no issue there.

As for whether it was a fast course, there were a suprising number of short pulls. There was nothing major but you certainly couldn't call it a flat fast course.

Overall......
Considering that there were 3 major races taking place and it was the first year, the whole event went reasonably well. I know there were some major issues like congestion on the 10 k route, the lack of a properly measured 10 k route and some of the faster Marathon runners taking a wrong turn and finishing early due to some stewarding issues. No doubt lessons will be learnt this year to improve the event for the future.

Overall, it was a great sporting event for the city of Limerick. There was a fantastic atmosphere in the city and it as a great opportunity for local runners to participate in a Half and Full Marathon in their home town. The 10 k event no doubt attracted a lot of first time runners and in a region where there is a serious shortage of road races, that is no bad thing. It will be interesting to see in future years how this event progresses now that it has got off to a flying start.
