Waterford - Race walker Kate Veale features on RTE News programme...

There was a short but interesting clip on the RTE Six-One News on Tuesday, the 30th of November featuring the race-walker Kate Veale from West Waterford AC. Kate is just 16 years old yet she has already represented Ireland at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this year finishing in a very credible 4th position. Despite being just outside the medals, she still managed to set a new Irish record for the 5 km.

Please note that the video clip which is available from the RTE Player service will probably not last too long so try and watch it as soon as you can.

Instructions....
1) Go to this link....http://www.rte.ie/player/#v=1086024
2) Press play and you'll have to watch the ad's...
3) Once the News starts, click on the box near the bottom right for 'Full Screen'.
4) Note that the News is around 49 minutes long. Drag the slider at the bottom up as far as 41:20 and then wait for the relevant section to start.

Kate was also in action in Derry last Sunday (...running this time!) in the All Ireland Cross Country Championships where she won the U18 race.

Races in Munster this weekend - Sat 4th - Sun 5th Dec 2010

Things are pretty quiet in Munster this weekend with just one race in Kerry. Perhaps it's just as well considering the poor conditions in the east of the province.

Kerry.....The 4th and final race in the FeetFirst 5k series takes place in Killarney, Co.Kerry at 11am. It seems as if the Kingdom has escaped the worst of the icy weather and as of the Friday, the course in Killarney was ice free. Considering that the temperature in Valentia is around 5 deg C at 7pm on Friday evening and there is a big bank of cloud coming in from the west then ice / frost on the course is very unlikely and this race is almost certain to go ahead. If anything, it may be a bit on the wet side ;o)

Entries for the race are taken near the Catheral at the western side of Killarney. The price is only €8 with part of it going to charity.

Kerry - John Lenihan - Mountain Running Legend Pt.1 of 3

For the last 2 decades, the name of John Lenihan has been synonymous with the sport of Mountain Running in Ireland. The man from Toureen in County Kerry has won multiple races over his career as well as becoming the World Mountain Running Champion in Switzerland back in 1991.

He has won the Carrauntoohil race in Kerry on 19 occasions and holds the current record of 71 minutes 43 seconds.
That time of just over 71 minutes is not the time for just getting to the summit. It's the time taken to run from the base of the mountain, up to the top of Caher, Irelands 3rd highest mountain (1001 metres asl)........accross the ridge to Carrauntoohil, the highest mountain in the country (1039 metres asl) ......and then return by the same route! An incredible time.

A 2 hour video has now been compiled and is available in 3 parts of roughly 40 minutes each.

Part 1 of 3 is shown below...

Clare...New Marathon Event in Sixmilebridge

One of Ireland's newest Marathons will kick off next Sunday, the 14th of November 2010 in the village of Sixmilebridge in Co.Clare. This race is unique in that it basically consists of 26 one mile loops! As you can imagine, keep track of the runners and the number of laps requires a lot of work and as a result, the number of entries had to be restricted. Entries for the 2010 race are now closed with runners from all over Ireland expected to attend.

Munster Intermediate Cross Country Championships...Sun 7th Nov 2010

Charleville Hosts Munster Championship

On Sunday next, the 7th of November, the North Cork AC will host the Munster Juvenile Uneven age and Intermediate Cross Country Championships at the Charleville Showgrounds at 12 noon. The juvenile races for club athletes ranging from Under 9 to Under 19 will be first off with the adult races to follow where there are large fields of competitors expected. The event is open to spectators from the public with an admission fee of 5 Euro for Adults and 2 Euro per child.

There has been a significant increase in numbers joining athletics clubs in the last year or so from around Munster at all ages and thus a similar increase has been seen in athletes competing at these events at all levels, from county to national championships. There is expected to be up to 1500 people attending the race on Sunday so it will be a great spectator event as well as a great event to take part in.

Results & Photos of the 2010 Dublin City Marathon

Conditions for the 2010 Dublin City Marathon were perfect with cool temperatures, blue skies and constant sunshine. There was a record entry for this year's event and there were plenty of faces from Cork in the race and out along the course. As an occasion, the Dublin City Marathon is truely the National Marathon with runners from all corners of Ireland taking part. It has a unique atmosphere that isn't found in any other Irish Marathon.

This year, I ran the Marathon from the unique perspective as one of the 3:45 pacers. One suprising aspect was the sheer number of runners on the road. I thought perhaps in the later stages, the road out ahead might clear a bit but it never did. The road was constantly full and at times, it got pretty congested when the route got narrow.

Results.....if you haven't seen them, you can check your times on the Dublin City Marathon website.

Results of the 2010 Dingle Half, Full and Ultra Marathon - Sat 4th Sept 2010

Before the event, it looked as if this event might be a wet affair with a cold front passing over. As it happened, the rain arrived early and the weather was ok for the big occasion in Dingle.

This year, there were 3 races on offer.

1) The Half-Marathon attracted around 1355 runners, up slightly on last years figure of 1326. The full results can be seen in XLS format HERE

2) A total of 382 runners took part in the full Marathon which is up from the 2009 figure of 314. The full results can be seen in XLS format HERE

When you compare the numbers to the Galway and Longford events then the Dingle certainly held it's own.
In the Half, Dingle got a huge turnout of 1355 which compares to 684 in Galway and 342 in Longford.
In the full Marathon, Dingle got 382 compared to 210 in Galway and 186 in Longford. Admittedly, the Galway and Longford events did go head to head yet still, it's hard to imagine that either event would have been as popular as Dingle.

3) The 3rd race in Dingle was of course the 50 mile Ultra-Marathon! This started at 7am and it must have been very lonely as the half and full Marathon runners were long gone by the time the Ultra runners arrived in Dingle around the 24 mile mark. This race attracted 45 hardy souls and was won by Vasiliy Neumerzhitskiy of Clonmel AC in a time of 6h 22m. What's even more remarkable is that Vasiliy had finished 2nd in the Longford Marathon just 6 days earlier in a time of 2h 45m!!

The challenge of a 50 mile race is of course completing it rather than just time.

The Ultra roll of honour can be seen in XLS format HERE

Photos.....there are a selection of photos on the RacePix website

Waterford......Results of the Ballinameela 5 - Fri 20 Aug 2010

There were in 84 finishers in the 2nd annual Ballinameela 5 Mile road race, held in on a glorious Autumn evening, in a quiet part of north-west Waterford.

This was mainly a fund-raiser for the local Ballinameela GAA club, who made a huge effort in getting out stewards at every road junction, and provided welcome refreshments at the end in the Community Centre.

There was a water station, at the junction just short of 3 miles, after which there were several sections where you were running straight into the setting-sun on the horizon. The last 50m and finish were on the GAA pitch itself.

The race had the same overall winners as 2009, however the initial course records set then, remain unbroken.
  • M: Sandis Bralitis, West Waterford AC 25:11 (2009: 24:53)
  • F: Corinna Walsh, West Waterford AC 31:10 (2009: 31:40)
The results are now online at the West Waterford AC site.

I've uploaded the route to MapMyRun.

Organized by West Waterford AC and Ballinameela GAA.

Limerick......Preview of the Kilteely Festival 5 mile road race - Fri 20 Aug 2010

This will be the sixth event in the Ballyhoura ACTIVE Summer Series of races.

Directions
Kilteely is in East Limerick. It’s not far from where the Bilboa 10k was held. It's on the other side of the N24 Limerick to Tipperary road …just 4km from the N24 exit to the start line so easy enough to get to even if travelling up from Cork via the main roads. There will be plenty of signage from the main roads.

The race organizer have an excellent map. Just zoom-out to see the general location.

One of the quickest ways out of Cork City on a Friday evening, would be to head up the M8 Motorway, pay the toll, and go straight to J10, at Cahir (North), and go left onto the N24.

We've received the following from update from Michael Herlihy :-
Kilteely Community Festival 5 Mile Road Race and Walk
"Next Friday 20th August at 8pm the Kilteely Festival road race and walk will take place and this year there is expected to be a large increase in numbers attending the event in East Limerick. This is the 6th event in the Ballyhoura ACTIVE Summer series of road races and walks. At each event in the series so far the numbers have been increasing and this is likely to continue at this race with the extra attraction of the festival weekend in the local community. Runners and walkers alike will also be attracted by the quiet country roads and scenic surroundings along the 5 mile course which the route will follow.
Entry to the race is on the evening of the race from 6p.m. to 7.45p.m. with a 10 Euro charge for runners and just 5 Euro for Walkers. The entries are taken near the start of the race from An Teach Community Centre, Cloverfield which is just 4km from the N24 main Limerick to Tipperary road. There will be signs from the N24 road near Pallasgreen to Cloverfield directing people unfamiliar with the area. For anyone seeking further information about the race, please contact Michael Herlihy of Ballyhoura Failte on 086 3168954 or search www.ballyhouracountry.com for the Kilteely festival road race. Results of the Clonmel Half-Marathon - Sun 15th Aug 2010

This was the first year of the Boston Scientific Half-Marathon in Clonmel but it seems as if didn't go as smoothly as planned. From what I have heard, the lead car took a wrong turn which resulted in the race doing 2 loops of the Clonmel town instead of 1. The end result was that the race was roughly 14.3 miles in length instead of the correct 13.1 miles.

Here is part of an e-mail that was sent to me....

I ran the half-marathon in Clonmel today. There seemed to be about 400, The start was on a good wide street. The plan was 1 loop of the town for a little over a mile then head out to the country. We ran the first loop no bother, then we came to the famous junction on the second time round, where we were supposed to turn right, however the lead car took a left and then we all had to follow, there were a few clonmel lads in the group with me and they shouted at the stewards that we should be going right. However we had to stay going.
To make matters worse there was no obvious 1mile marker, so those of us w/out garmins had no clue of pace. We came back to the junction yet again and this time we turned right, ran on a while and there she was the 2 mile mark. The garmin wearers all agreed we were at 3.2 miles instead of 2. It was the most galling feeling I’ve had in a race, pace out the door, but it was so annoying to know that you had to run the extra, on such a hot day. I hoped they might move the finish line to the 12 mile mark but no hope of that, we had to run the full 14.3.
At the finish line all garmins were saying 14.3+
Apart from that it was well organised, good food, physios etc. Good hq, lots of toilets, easy parking

I suppose it's easy to be critical in hindsight when a mistake by one individual has such a large consequence when other elements of the race may have been well organised? However when you consider that the entry fee was €35 then I presume that a lot of people will feel very disappointed.

To put the €35 entry fee into context, the Mallow '10' mile costs €10, the Ballycotton '10' costs €15 and the Dungarvan '10' costs €20. Why should a race that is only 3.1 miles (.....or 4.3 miles ;o) longer cost more?
